Faust’s last shift was on March 3, 2017, when he rode with his handler one final time. During this emotional journey, he received a traditional final radio call as a tribute to his years of service.

The touching moment, recorded and posted on BNSF Railway’s YouTube channel, captures the dispatcher acknowledging Faust’s career and wishing him a happy retirement.
The video, viewed more than 720,000 times, shows Faust whimpering as he sits beside Schaffer, who is visibly moved by the moment.

“K-9 partner Faust just completed his last shift after serving as an Explosions detection and police service canine for eight years and one day, and he is now officially retired.
Faust, thank you for your service to the BNSF Railway, the communities you’ve served, and most importantly, for serving and protecting your handler. Now, we wish you a well, healthy, and happy retirement. Radio transparent,” the dispatcher announced.
The bond between Faust and Schaffer was unique, with Schaffer noting that he spent more time with Faust than with his own family.

After retiring, Faust became a permanent member of the Schaffer family. He passed away in 2020 at 13, but his legacy continues to inspire.
BNSF Railway recently honored Faust by inducting him into the We Ride to Provide (WRTP) Hall of Fame, celebrating his unwavering dedication and service.
Schaffer expressed his gratitude to Faust in a Facebook post, saying, “Faust, thank you for all the good you have done for BNSF and other agencies – but mostly, I thank you for getting us both home safe after every shift.”

He acknowledged their deep connection, stating, “The connection between Faust and me was unlike anything I’ve had with any other dog. He saw me at my best and my worst. He saw me laugh and cry.”
Faust’s story reminds us of the incredible bond between K-9 officers and their handlers, and his service will not be forgotten.
