The Cocoi Heron, scientifically known as Ardea cocoi, stands out as one of South America’s most graceful birds. With its sleek plumage and long, slender bill, this bird is a captivating sight, frequently seen in the lowland wetlands across the continent.
During the breeding season, the Cocoi Heron undergoes remarkable physical changes. Its bill brightens to a vivid yellow with a red base while its back, neck, and crest feathers lengthen.

The Cocoi Heron is found throughout most of South America, from Panama to Chile and Argentina, except in the higher Andes.

The timing of the breeding season varies depending on the region, occurring in July in Surinam and between August and November in Brazil and Argentina. Cocoi Herons build their nests in trees, bushes, or reedbeds using reeds, twigs, and grass.
The female typically lays 3-4 light blue eggs, speckled with white. Both parents share the responsibility of incubating the eggs for around 26 days. The young herons stay near the nest for up to 12 weeks, venturing around the 6-week mark.
