Rescuers gave a struggling kitten the name Ashley when they found her in dire condition. Sandi Lawson, one of the rescuers, described the scene as heartbreaking, stating, “She was in horrible condition and wouldn’t have survived much longer.”
The story behind Ashley’s situation was disturbing. Local animal activists believed that someone had maliciously poured tar onto the property, aware that kittens resided there.
Lawson speculated, “Somebody had come onto this property to pour tar, likely because they knew there were cats and they didn’t want them around.”
The cruelty of the act was shocking, and Ashley’s suffering was severe. The tar had sealed her eyes shut and covered her small body, causing immense distress.
She was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic and required intensive care, including a 24-hour stay in the ICU.
The cost amounted to $1,700, but once Ashley’s story was shared, generous people stepped in to help. Donations flowed in from those who couldn’t bear her plight.
anice Richard, Ashley’s foster mom, was touched by the community’s support, stating, “We were able to raise that money very, very quickly. And not only that, the community has come together for this little one.”
Despite her ordeal, Ashley’s determination shone through as she gradually regained strength.
Janice worked diligently, using pet-safe soap and mineral oils to gently remove the tar from Ashley’s fur—a painstaking task she had to repeat every three hours.
“She’s just a little doll. She’s endured so much, and she has a great personality,” Janice remarked.
Over time, Ashley’s health improved dramatically. She regained her ability to walk and show no signs of vision problems.
Janice was relieved to confirm, “Her eyes are perfectly clear. I don’t see anything that would give me any indication there’s a health problem anywhere.”
Finally, Ashley was ready for adoption, and she wouldn’t be leaving alone. From the beginning, Janice and the rescue team insisted that Ashley be adopted with her two siblings, Ty and Vanessa.
Their story on a local television station led to a wave of adoption applications.
Gerry and Joanne Drew were among those moved by Ashley’s story. Initially planning to adopt only one kitten, they decided to welcome all three siblings into their home.
Joanne expressed, “My heart just broke. I couldn’t imagine what she had been through. And to see her now, it’s just amazing. I hope we’re going to have a great, long life with all three of them.”
Ashley, once at the brink of despair, now had a future filled with love. In her new home, she thrived, receiving affection and plenty of cuddles. For Janice, saying goodbye was bittersweet.
She had devoted her heart to Ashley’s recovery, and the kitten had left a lasting impression on her life. Yet, seeing Ashley safe, happy, and surrounded by a loving family made it all worthwhile.
Ashley’s journey, which began with cruelty and despair, transformed into a tale of hope, resilience, and kindness. Against all odds, she survived—and she finally had a place to call home.
