When I take my furry friend to the vet, I can’t wait to return them home. It’s always a nerve-wracking time for both pets and their owners. We should always strive to collect our pets promptly to minimize their stress.
However, not everyone seems to share this sentiment, as demonstrated by a recent incident that deeply troubled a veterinary assistant in Atlanta.

Puppy Left Behind
A veterinary assistant, Dominique Humphries, shared a heartbreaking story on TikTok about a puppy left at the clinic for days.
The puppy, a Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever mix was brought in for an appointment, but the owner never returned to pick him up.

Despite numerous attempts to contact the owner, they repeatedly assured Humphries they were on their way but never showed up. The abandonment puzzled and saddened Humphries.
“The owner didn’t want to pick up the dog because they were scared of losing him to a health issue, even though the doctor told them the dog was fine. They just left the dog in the exam room, and we didn’t hear from them until the next day,” Humphries explained to Newsweek.
The puppy, described as friendly and playful, received extra attention and playtime from the vet staff. Humphries’ video about the incident went viral, with many expressing concern for the two-month-old pup.

Pick-up Day
After three days, the owner finally came to collect the puppy. Humphries was occupied with another patient and couldn’t confront them. She expressed sadness over the situation, feeling the puppy deserved a better home.
“They came to get the dog on the third day, which made me sad because I feel like the patient deserves a better home. I have not heard from the owner since, and I’m fearful but also don’t want to know if something happened to the dog,” Humphries said.
Many viewers of Humphries’ video believed the puppy should not be with such a neglectful owner. However, Humphries was bound by veterinary protocol, which required her to care for the puppy until the owner returned.
“I wish there were more that I could’ve done for him, but I have to follow protocols from the hospital. I hope he’s doing great, but if I have an update later on, I will keep everyone posted,” she concluded.
Final Word
This story highlights the importance of understanding that veterinary clinics are not doggy daycares.
Vets work hard to keep our pets healthy and happy, and it’s our responsibility to make their job easier.
Always ensure you pick up your pet promptly after their appointment to minimize their stress and show respect for the veterinary staff’s efforts.
