Three days ago, Javier, a young dog, was shot and sustained serious injuries, including severe wounds to his muzzle and a broken leg.
The scenes were heartbreaking, with four other dogs having died nearby from gunshot wounds and severe blood loss.
Thinking about the ordeal they went through left me in a state of despair. I couldn’t ignore Javier, as my conscience urged me to help.
During our long journey of more than 100 kilometers to the vet, fear gripped my heart, but I was determined to get him the help he desperately needed.
Upon arriving at the veterinary clinic, the extent of Javier’s injuries became undeniably clear. His wounds were gruesome and his leg dangled limply. Fortunately, tests showed no infection.
The veterinarians promptly administered pain relief, conducted blood tests, and admitted Javier to intensive care.
Despite having bullets and shrapnel lodged throughout his body, he remained calm and never attempted to harm me. His resilience was remarkable.
The veterinarians worked diligently to remove as much debris as possible. At approximately two years old, Javier was still quite young and otherwise healthy, which made us hopeful for his recovery.
After a successful surgery, Javier’s leg had to be amputated up to the shoulder, and a drainage system was put in place. He also underwent plastic surgery on his muzzle, and we closely observed the healing process.
Post-surgery, a CT scan was scheduled to assess his condition thoroughly. Remarkably, on the day following his surgery, Javier managed to stand on his three legs for the first time.
Today, Javier is ready to go home from the veterinarian’s office. The doctor confirmed that he is healing well, with his face nearly recovered. His wound care now involves daily cleaning with chlorhexidine and applying ointment.
Despite his traumatic experience and almost losing his life, Javier now rests peacefully on a sofa, likely the most comfortable he has ever felt.
Truly, he is an extraordinary dog, radiating warmth and courage. “Javi, you are a hero in my heart,” I told him, expressing the profound admiration and affection I feel for his incredible spirit.
