A mother’s instinct to care for her young knows no bounds, whether she walks on two legs or four. Regardless of the species, a mother’s primary concern is always the well-being and safety of her children, making sure they’re fed and secure from the threats of the world.
For street-dwelling animal mothers, this can be particularly challenging. They face the daunting task of finding food and shelter while keeping their young safe, often having to distrust humans around them, even those who may be there to help.
Such was the case when a compassionate rescuer named Niall Harbison learned about a mother dog and her puppies being abandoned in a remote area. Outraged by the situation, Niall knew that anger would not solve anything. He collected himself, grabbed some food, and set out to find them.
Speaking to The Dodo, Niall recalled, “She had a big padlock around her neck. She was dumped there with her five little puppies. I had to show her I was leaving the food, so I put it a bit away from her puppies.”
Initially, the mother dog was hostile, barking fiercely at Niall whenever he approached. However, determined to help them find safety, Niall persisted in visiting and leaving food. Over time, the mother began to trust him enough to allow him to drop off the food and walk away.
Encouraged by this progress, Niall devised a plan to rescue the entire family. After a week of earning the mother dog’s trust, he returned with some friends and a few crates, prepared to move them to safety.
“We caught the five puppies first and placed them in the box, since they were easier to catch,” Niall recounted. “She obviously wasn’t going to leave without her puppies, so despite putting up a last bit of resistance, we managed to coax her into the box with them. It was a huge relief.”
Once secured, Niall transported the dog family to a vet clinic for a complete check-up. The first order of business was removing the padlock from the mother dog’s neck, liberating her from its weight.
After receiving a clean bill of health, the puppies were swiftly adopted into loving homes. Their mother, now named Brittany, found her new beginning with her rescuer, Niall, who adopted her himself.
“She is a loving dog. Super friendly, super energetic. She’s come a long way,” Niall proudly shared.
This heartwarming story is a testament to the power of compassion and persistence. Thanks to Niall’s tireless efforts, Brittany and her puppies now lead the lives they deserve, filled with care and joy. Niall’s dedication not only transformed their lives but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the difference one person can make.
