Initially frightened and hesitant, Klaus the cat has gradually warmed up to the individuals who saved him.
Klaus was discovered trapped in a cage intended for raccoons near a Texas junkyard. He was found covered in grime and in poor condition.
Luckily, Klaus was brought to the Austin Animal Center (AAC), where it was estimated that he was around one year old. Klaus was very frightened and seemed feral at first, but as he settled in and felt more secure, his demeanor began to change.
“When he first arrived, he was hissing and retreating due to fear, but he’s now much more comfortable,” explained Hanna Peterson, a senior customer care representative at AAC, speaking to The Dodo.
“He enjoys being petted, although he remains somewhat shy and reserved.”
Upon arrival at the shelter, Klaus was notably underweight. Further tests revealed that Klaus had severe anemia and, surprisingly, it was discovered he was not one, but actually nine years old. It seems Klaus has aged well!
Klaus now resides with a foster family where he’s focused on regaining strength and gaining weight, aiming to be ready for neuter surgery and eventual adoption.
“He is quite timid, possibly because he isn’t feeling well,” said Carla Penny, Klaus’s foster mom, in an interview with The Dodo. “He has a good appetite, and I’m optimistic that he’ll gain weight and his red blood cell count will improve.”
Klaus’s foster mom has decided to delay giving him a bath until he feels better and more confident, to avoid causing him any additional stress. Once he’s clean, people are sure to admire how beautiful and fluffy he is.
The events leading up to Klaus’s capture remain a mystery, but now, thanks to his rescue, he has a safe environment to regain his strength before eventually finding a loving home for good.
