In the quaint town of San Donaci, Italy, a touching tale of loyalty unfolds as a 7-year-old German shepherd named Tommy faithfully attends church services nearly daily.
What makes Tommy’s presence particularly poignant is the reason behind his visits: he is patiently waiting for his beloved owner to return, even though she will never come back.
Tommy’s owner, Maria Margherita Lochi, formed a special bond with the abandoned dog when she found him in the fields near her home.
Known for her compassion toward strays, Mrs. Lochi adopted Tommy and would walk with him to church from their residence every day.
During Mass, the priest would allow Tommy to sit quietly by her feet, a familiar sight to the churchgoers who grew accustomed to their companionship.
Tragically, after Mrs. Lochi’s passing, a funeral service was held in the same church where Tommy continued to attend, now in mourning alongside the other mourners.
Despite the loss, Tommy persists in his routine, arriving punctually for services and sitting attentively by the altar as if keeping vigil for his departed owner.
Father Donato Panna, the church priest, shared his sentiments about Tommy’s steadfast presence: “He used to come to Mass with Maria, and he was devoted to her. I let him stay inside as he was always so well-behaved.”
Moved by Tommy’s dedication, Father Panna couldn’t bear to turn him away, especially after losing his dog recently. Thus, Tommy is welcome to stay until the end of Mass, when he can leave.
Despite not having a permanent home, Tommy has found solace in the compassion of the village community. Residents have embraced him as their own, ensuring he is cared for and leaving food for him.
However, the hope remains to find a suitable forever home for Tommy, where he can continue to embody the unwavering loyalty and love he shared with his late owner.
