As scorching temperatures hit southern California, humans aren’t the only ones seeking relief. A homeowner recently captured a heartwarming scene of a mother bear and her cub taking a refreshing dip in their pool.

The delightful incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the mercury soared 91 degrees Fahrenheit. Footage shows the playful brown bears enjoying the water, providing joy amid the intense heatwave gripping much of the United States.

The video, shared by KTLA, features the baby bear splashing around before being joined by its mother. The two engage in some light-hearted play by the pool’s edge before the mother bear decides to join the fun, causing water to cascade over the sides as she jumps in. After a brief aquatic frolic, the baby bear climbs out and scurries away.

Bear sightings become more frequent during the summer as people spend more time outside. The National Park Service advises maintaining a safe distance from bears, avoiding sudden movements, and ensuring you are noticeable to prevent startling them.

“Bears typically only attack if they feel threatened, need to defend their cubs, or protect their food,” notes the National Park Service. They also recommend being aware of your surroundings, especially in areas known for bear activity or abundant food sources like berry bushes.

Meanwhile, the heatwave continues to affect vast regions, with the Midwest, Northeast, and South experiencing extreme temperatures. Meteorologists predict the heat will persist, leading to potential power shortages.

PJM Interconnection, the largest electric grid operator in the US, issued a level one emergency alert, cautioning its 65 million customers about possible blackouts. Despite the high demand, PJM expects sufficient power and reserve capacity to handle the additional load from air conditioners.

In the Northeast, states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, will see temperatures soaring into the upper 90s. The heatwave, which initially impacted the South, now expands into the Midwest and Northeast, placing many areas under heat advisories.

Record highs are anticipated in places like Washington, DC, Northern New Jersey, and New York City, with the heat index potentially reaching or exceeding 100 degrees in parts of the Northeast and Midwest.

The Southwest is also enduring extreme heat, with several records shattered in states like Texas and Arizona. Tragically, seven heat-related deaths were confirmed in one of America’s hottest metro areas, with many more fatalities reported across the Southwest.
