In March 2024, while vacationing in Morocco, Carolin and her partner stumbled upon a scene that touched their hearts—a pair of dogs playfully tussling with a tiny kitten outside their apartment.

At first, the situation didn’t seem alarming, so they fell back to observe from their balcony. However, it soon became evident that the kitten was out of its element and needed help.

Deciding to step in, the couple went downstairs, searching unsuccessfully for the kitten’s mother or siblings. Concerned for her well-being, they chose to rescue the delicate calico kitten, bringing her into their care.

“Inside, we discovered she was in a poor state; she was dirty, undernourished, and suffering from fleas and ticks,” Carolin recalled.

A visit to the vet the following day revealed that the kitten, estimated to be around three months old, likely lost her eyesight due to a severe infection.

Despite these challenges, the couple provided her with necessary treatments, like de-worming and flea medication, intending initially to find her a loving home in Morocco.

Yet, as time went on, Carolin found herself deeply bonded with the kitten. “I fell in love with her and couldn’t imagine leaving her behind,” she shared. The kitten, named Liah—meaning “lioness”—captivated Carolin with her playful and bold personality.

Carolin faced the logistical challenge of bringing Liah to her home in Stuttgart, Germany. Though the process required a four-month wait in Morocco, far longer than planned, Carolin’s resolve was firm.

She found a supportive local woman to help manage vaccinations and documentation while also providing care for Liah until she could be reunited with her.

In January 2025, Liah finally made it to Europe. Quickly settling into her new home, she found companionship in Luna, another special needs cat adopted by Carolin.

“They enjoy playing and exploring together,” Carolin remarked, expressing delight at Liah’s adaptability and zest for life. Even without sight, Liah excelled in playful activities such as climbing, wrestling, and even soccer-like games with berries.

Amazingly, Liah seems to know when to seek help, often meowing for Carolin’s assistance when she can’t find her way down after climbing.

“She only does this when I’m home,” Carolin noted. It’s as if Liah senses when it’s safe to explore knowing her human will be there to support her.

Though Liah was born with blindness, it doesn’t hinder her spirit or happiness, showcasing the strength and resilience often underestimated in special needs animals.

“Blind cats lead full, joyful lives,” Carolin said, debunking any misconceptions about her pet’s quality of life. “They are our teachers in optimism and vigor.”

Tragically, Carolin’s partner, who was part of Liah’s rescue, passed away last year. Yet Liah’s presence offered solace and a reminder of shared love and memories from the couple’s time in Morocco.

“Liah embodies those cherished moments,” Carolin expressed. The resilient kitten not only brings cheer but also invigorates Carolin with inspiration to face life’s challenges bravely.

For Carolin, Liah stands as a symbol of love and perseverance. “We share a profound bond,” she remarked warmly. “Her strength in navigating everyday life is truly inspiring. Liah is more than a pet; she’s my soul cat.”
