Hope For Paws, a nonprofit rescue organization based in California, got wind of the situation. Responding to a call about the abandoned dog, two rescuers rushed to the school to help.

The frightened dog stayed in a narrow space behind the school building for nearly two weeks. Recognizing the complexity of the situation, the school’s staff reached out to those with experience in handling such instances—Hope For Paws rescuers.

To ensure the dog’s safety and prevent any attempts to flee, the team used baby gates to section off the area. Initially, the dog remained immobilized with fear, lying on a pile of leaves. However, the offer of a cheeseburger finally coaxed him to engage, revealing the reality of his long hunger.

Despite the gentle coaxing, fear was still evident in his eyes. Initially hesitant, the dog slowly inched towards the rescuer until she could safely reach him. “It was a challenge to get to him in such a small space. JoAnn used a gentle snare to safely secure and pull him out,” shared the organization.

After a few minutes of reassurance, the dog, soon named Rufus, began to calm down. He was transported to a veterinary hospital, where he received a health check-up and a much-needed bath. Throughout the process, Rufus remained calm, seemingly aware that he was now in safe hands.

Within just two weeks, Rufus exhibited remarkable changes in his demeanor. Though some insecurities lingered, he was visibly happier and more playful. In the meantime, L A Animal Rescue agreed to care for him while he waited for a forever home.

“Rufus is approximately two years old and a beagle, corgi, spaniel mix. He gets along well with dogs and people. He’s working on potty training but is a quick learner,” the rescue announced on Facebook.

Thankfully, about a month later, Rufus was adopted by a loving family in Camarillo, California. Rufus ultimately found his happy ending and is now living a fulfilling life. As noted on his little bandana, Rufus truly embodies the spirit of a super dog, displaying immense bravery in overcoming fear and learning to trust humans once more.
