A passionate animal enthusiast and photographer, John Hwang recently encountered a dog that captured his heart at the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter in Los Angeles.

During his visits to shelters, where he spends time with needy animals, he met a 10-year-old dog who seemed deeply sad, curled up in a corner and barely lifting her head.

John described the encounter to The Dodo: “My first reaction was that this dog was shy or sad and didn’t want to engage with me.” However, he was surprised when she eventually approached him.

As he observed her shivering slightly, he noted her endearing awkwardness, saying, “She seemed awkward, but the way she moved was adorable. She was dirty, but her heart was pure.”

As John began to engage with her, the dog sniffed him cautiously before leaning against the fence, clearly yearning for affection.

They spent time together, relaxing and enjoying each other’s company, with John reflecting, “We certainly could have sat there all day.”

Despite her initial fear, the dog revealed a loving nature, teaching a valuable lesson about not judging based on appearances.

The emotional connection between John and the dog resonated with many. Thousands of people saw John’s heartfelt photos on social media, and many were inspired to help her find a home. “A lot of people were in love with this dog and were trying everything they could to get her out,” John shared.

Among those touched by her story was Leashes of Love Rescue, an organization dedicated to rescuing dogs from high-kill shelters.

Volunteer Cathi Perez immediately acted upon learning about the dog, named Annabelle, and took her under her wing as soon as she was available for adoption.

Cathi described Annabelle’s transformation: “She was so thrilled to get out of her kennel… The second time she came out, she was delighted. She wasn’t the same dog anymore.”

After being taken to the vet for an examination to address an eye infection and other health issues, Annabelle is set to be adopted by a loving woman who has already committed to providing her with a permanent home.
