Unusual Sightings and Scientific Curiosity

The discovery of this rare bear cub has left scientists intrigued and puzzled. They speculate that the cub’s unusual fur color could be due to a genetic mutation, potentially making it either an albino or spirit bear.

However, without closer observation, explicitly checking for pink eyes, which are characteristic of albinism, the exact nature of this mutation remains undetermined.

Expert Observations

Arthur De Jong described the cub’s fur as having a “caramel, light, sort of brownish sheen,” distinguishing it from actual white coloration.

He explained that the cub’s fur color likely results from recessive genes inherited from both parents despite the mother being a typical black bear.

Michael Allen, a bear expert with over two decades of experience in the Whistler area, also expressed his astonishment.

“In my 23 years, I’ve seen black, reddish-brown, chocolate-brown, and blonde bears, but never a cub with such light, almost white fur in this population,” he stated.
