In Alaska’s vast, icy expanse, life for a bear can be challenging, especially when finding a meal. However, sometimes luck shines even on the sleepiest of creatures.
This was the case for one bear in Brooks River, Katmai National Park, as it went on a salmon-hunting adventure.

During the spring migration, sockeye salmon journey back to their birthplace to spawn.
These fish battle powerful currents and leap up waterfalls, displaying remarkable strength and determination. At these waterfalls, bears position themselves, ready to catch the fish mid-leap.

Photographers Juergen and Christine Sohns were there to capture this remarkable event. They witnessed a bear perfectly positioned at the falls, ready to catch an easy meal as a sockeye salmon leaped towards its mouth.
The unexpected happened when it seemed the bear would have the most straightforward catch of its life.
In a moment of pure comedy, the salmon hit the bear’s nose, startling it and causing it to miss the catch.

The fish, unable to change direction mid-air, continued upstream, leaving the bear bewildered and empty-handed.
Juergen Sohns described the scene as both fascinating and amusing. He noted that once the fish leap out of the water, they cannot change direction, making them seem like easy prey. However, this bear’s momentary lapse turned a sure feast into a missed opportunity.
Despite this funny mishap, the bear’s efforts weren’t in vain for long. It soon moved upstream and caught some salmon, ensuring it didn’t go hungry.
