A disturbing incident involving a bear cub tormented by a group of friends in North Carolina has sparked outrage, leading to the orphaned cub finding solace in an animal refuge.

The Appalachian Wildlife Refuge has condemned the actions of the friends who forcibly grabbed the cub to take selfies in Asheville, western North Carolina, describing their behavior as “shocking.” They provided an update on the cub’s condition, revealing its harrowing ordeal.

The distressing incident unfolded when six friends were captured on video capturing terrified bear cubs, including the one in question, for photo opportunities near Berrington Village Apartments on April 16. This reckless act separated the cub from its mother and siblings, causing immense trauma.

Since then, employees at the refuge have worked tirelessly to stabilize the traumatized cub, documenting its recovery journey.

Recent photographs depict the once-frightened black bear cub resting comfortably and receiving gentle care from refuge officials.

The North Carolina Wildlife Agency reported that the cub appeared frightened, wet, and shivering when responders arrived. Additionally, it seemed to have sustained a paw injury during the ordeal.

Despite the initial distress, the cub has made remarkable progress under the care of the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge.

Executive Director Savannah Trantham shared that the cub has bonded with another rescued bear at the refuge, demonstrating resilience and adaptation.

Trantham emphasized that despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the cub’s rescue, there is hope for its future.

Both cubs thrive in the refuge’s care, exhibiting healthy behaviors and interactions that mimic wild bears. The refuge team remains optimistic about their eventual release back into the wild.

The video footage from April 16 evoked strong emotions of frustration, sadness, and anger within the community, prompting reflection on the challenges faced by wildlife daily. Trantham expressed gratitude that the cub is safe and well cared for despite being separated from its mother.
