On November 28, a remarkable puppy named Sasha celebrated a significant milestone, turning 12 weeks old. This occasion holds special meaning for Sasha, who was born with several challenges including hydrocephalus, a cleft lip, and a cleft palate.
From the moment she was born, Sasha has been under the dedicated care of Marie DeMarco, a rescuer who focuses on special needs animals. Marie runs an organization called FURRR 911, which stands for Felines Urgently Rescued, Rehabilitated, and Rehomed. While Marie typically helps cats, she recognized that Sasha, despite being a dog, would fit right in with her mission.
On Facebook, Marie shared, “Sasha has been a fighter since the beginning, overcoming numerous obstacles in her short life. Looking into her eyes makes all my worries vanish,” she expressed, mentioning the many nights she spent sleepless and stressed, yet filled with love for Sasha.
Sasha’s journey hasn’t been easy. Weighing just over two pounds now, she recently battled a nasty illness common in puppies with cleft palates. Her symptoms included fever, runny nose, vomiting, inflamed eye, and weight loss — a dangerous situation for such a tiny puppy.
When Sasha didn’t respond to antibiotics, Marie grew concerned. Although Sasha’s temperature normalized, her energy remained low, and she resisted eating. Worried that Sasha’s hydrocephalus might be at play, Marie consulted Sasha’s neurologist. Following new guidance, Sasha started on a daily routine of medication, fluids, and tube feedings, eventually regaining her playful, affectionate nature by the time she turned 12 weeks.
Marie, who might soon officially adopt Sasha, describes her as “very calm and reserved.” Unlike typical puppies, Sasha enjoys perching near Marie’s foot and loves cuddling with her feline companions, despite their larger size.
Sasha’s story is an inspiring tale of resilience and the power of care and dedication. Though her future is uncertain, Sasha is surrounded by love and support. “Sasha is a true inspiration,” Marie shared, highlighting the puppy’s courage and zest for life despite her medical conditions.

Despite her brief life, she brought immense joy to her human and animal friends. Sasha’s legacy lives on through FURRR 911, which continues to rescue puppies with cleft palates.
