For a long time, a female dog known only for her life on the streets faced constant hardship and pain just to survive each day. Her situation seemed hopeless until two compassionate individuals stepped in to help. This couple, experienced in rescuing animals, was particularly moved by the desolate look in this dog’s eyes.
The dog, unfamiliar with affection or care, was about to experience a brighter chapter in her life. Brady Oliveira and Alex Blumberg learned about her dire situation through a friend’s sighting on the streets. When they arrived to help her, they were taken aback by her conditions—severely underweight, hairless, and on the brink of death.
Alex and Brady shared with The Dodo that the dog’s appearance was shocking, resembling something between a “Gollum and baby dinosaur-elephant.” Initially frightened, the dog eventually allowed Brady to lift her, her eyes filled with defeat.
Brady remarked how it seemed she had lived this way for years and might only have a few days left. A veterinary examination brought even more distressing news: she was extremely malnourished and dehydrated, her blood work showed alarming results, she suffered from severe sarcoptic mange, and her teeth were in terrible condition.
Despite the challenges, Brady and Alex were committed to giving her the attention and care needed to survive. The vet fondly referred to the dog as “Mija,” meaning “my girl,” which they decided would be her name. Once home, Mija, though exhausted, finally felt a sense of safety. Initially, she struggled to perform typical dog behaviors like cuddling.
Slowly but steadily, she began to gain strength. On a visit to the beach, Mija made her first attempt at running ten days later, a moment so touching that it brought her rescuers to tears.
Over the course of two months, under Brady and Alex’s care and devotion, Mija transformed. Her fur grew back, and she looked like a new dog. The couple made a sincere promise to ensure her a good life and fulfilled it when Mija found a new loving home. Brady expressed their emotional farewell, noting it was one of the most moving experiences they had in dog rescue. “Mija was ADOPTED and is very loved by her new Mama,” Brady shared in a heartfelt video.
