Emma, a 14-year-old Poodle, began her journey to a new life when she was left at a shelter inside a crate, alongside a cozy blanket and a few toys. At the time, the frail dog weighed a mere four pounds.
When Adrian Lott and Spencer Erickson from Seattle, Washington, came across Emma’s photograph, they instantly felt a connection and decided to adopt the tiny dog. Just two weeks later, Emma found herself in her new forever home.

Arriving in Seattle, Emma was understandably cautious and nervous due to the trauma and neglect she seemed to have experienced. As Lott shared with Newsweek, Emma’s small frame was marked by a curved spine and shaky hind legs, indicating severe neglect. Even though she was extremely underweight, she faced significant health challenges, including the urgent need for dental care.
Despite these issues, Adrian and Spencer were committed to providing Emma with the love and support she desperately needed. “She quickly formed a bond with me. As she recuperated and got comfortable in our home, she began following me around and loved to snuggle on my lap,” Lott explained.
Emma trembled with fear during her initial days with her new family, likely overwhelmed by her past and the new surroundings. Yet, as she realized she was truly loved and in a safe place, her trembling ceased.

In the realm of dog adoption, many often opt for puppies, unintentionally overlooking the elder dogs waiting for love. Adrian and Spencer’s experience with Emma showcases the profound joy and affection senior dogs can bring. Initially, they believed Emma might only be with them for a few months due to her poor health. Defying those expectations, Emma recently celebrated her second anniversary with them.
Reflecting on this milestone, her parents humorously noted on Instagram that she has outlived their expectations, with her vet jestingly remarking that she’s “basically pickled.” This underscores the transformative power of love.

Now enjoying life alongside four other senior dogs, Emma has gained weight and undergone hip surgery, dramatically improving her wellbeing. Most importantly, she’s discovered the warmth of a loving home. Lott shared with GeoBeats Animals, “With a senior dog, every moment is precious. We make sure she knows she’s loved and safe for as long as she’s with us. She’ll never question her importance again.”
For those considering expanding their families with a canine companion, opening your heart to a senior dog can bring unexpected joy and warmth. Every dog, young or old, deserves a loving home.
