Dogs often cling to their routines, regardless of age or temperament, highlighting their steadfast nature. This was a lesson Nicole Michelle, a dog owner from New York, learned firsthand when her elderly dog, Bruiser, got into a bit of a predicament.
Bruiser, a 13-year-old canine set in his ways, faced an unexpected challenge in following his routine. Due to construction on a new deck in their backyard, Bruiser was unable to access his usual spot for doing his business. Despite the change, Bruiser was determined to adhere to his regular habits.

While Nicole and her boyfriend were away, they entrusted a friend with the care of Bruiser, giving one primary instruction: to walk him in the front yard instead of the backyard. However, Bruiser had no intention of compromising. The dog sitter did her best to navigate around the ongoing construction, keeping Bruiser on a leash. Nonetheless, Bruiser managed to pull away, leading to an unfortunate tumble into a hole meant for the deck’s footings.
Bruiser found himself stuck in the hole, and all attempts by the sitter to free him proved unsuccessful. Responding quickly, animal control and the Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company from New York arrived in less than an hour and a half. The dedicated team expanded the hole, allowing Bruiser to be safely extracted without injury.

The Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company posted about the rescue on Facebook, highlighting their efforts to aid not just people, but also animals in need. Nicole, who received news of the incident, immediately returned from her trip. She found comfort in knowing Bruiser was unharmed and acting as if nothing had happened.
Expressing her gratitude, Nicole commented, “Thanks everyone!!! He’s totally fine & acting like nothing even happened. We’re very appreciative of all those who helped our old man today.”
Bruiser’s adventure serves as a reminder that older dogs, despite their familiarity with their surroundings, still need careful supervision, especially when routine paths are disrupted by new obstacles.
