In July, a brave Labrador retriever named Ella protected her family from a mountain lion in Cedar Hills, Utah, suffering severe injuries in the process.
As reported by KSLTV News, Ella’s confrontation with the wild animal occurred on July 19 while her owner, Crystal Michaelis, and her children were playing outside.
The seven-year-old yellow Lab appeared to sense the nearby danger, acting anxiously as she moved between the children and the area where the mountain lion lurked.
Although Michaelis did not see the predator, she noticed Ella’s unusual behavior and kept a watchful eye on her surroundings.
Concerned for their safety, Michaelis safely brought her children inside. It was then that she discovered the extent of Ella’s injuries.
Blood was splattered across the patio, and Ella had suffered significant wounds to her head, face, legs, tongue, and neck. “When we opened the door, everything, including the door and patio, was covered in blood,” Michaelis recounted.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources confirmed finding mountain lion tracks nearby. The animal may have been drawn toward a neighbor’s goats, leading it too close to the Michaelis residence.
Despite the ordeal, Ella is expected to fully recover from her injuries, which included over 30 bites across her body.
The local wildlife authorities have since issued a warning to residents to remain cautious. Faith Jolley, a public relations officer for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, noted an increase in deer sightings in the area.
Mountain lions often follow deer, their primary prey, which explains the recent predator activity.
According to Michaelis, Ella demonstrated remarkable courage and determination during the attack, never relenting from her defensive position. Her family remains hopeful as Ella continues to heal and regain her health.
