Dollie, a kitten once leading a typical life, unexpectedly faced a series of health challenges that altered her journey. At just four months old, Dollie developed a mysterious illness that baffled her owners.

“She suddenly wasn’t feeling well,” Sara-Rose Brenner from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) shared with The Dodo.

“Initially, her symptoms weren’t clear, but soon she wasn’t behaving like the playful kitten she should be.”

Alarmingly, parts of Dollie’s body, like her tail and ears, began to deteriorate. “We hadn’t encountered anything like this before,” stated Mike Keiley, the director of adoption centers and programs at MSPCA-Angell.

Faced with mounting health issues, Dollie’s original family made the difficult decision to surrender her to the MSPCA. However, her story was far from over.

Determined to uncover the root of Dollie’s condition, her new caregivers consulted dermatology expert Dr. Meagan Painter. Dr. Painter identified the issue as ischemic dermatopathy, a condition that can cause tissue death in sensitive areas.

Despite the diagnosis, there was hope for Dollie’s recovery. “We may never know the initial cause, but diagnosing her condition early allowed us to prevent further deterioration and save two of her legs,” explained Dr. Painter.

“Although we had to amputate her tail and one leg, we believe she’ll lead a long, happy life thanks to the collaborative efforts between the hospitals and clinic.”

Now on the road to recovery, Dollie faces the final hurdle of finding a loving home. After two months of intensive care and treatment, the MSPCA announced that Dollie is ready for adoption.

“Dollie has been through so much, and it’s time for her to find the loving home she truly deserves,” Keiley expressed.

“She won’t require any special ongoing care due to her condition—just a family that appreciates her unique spirit and is ready to provide her any necessary future medical attention.”
