Brazilian cyclists Ladislau Alcântara and Rosilene Jansen set out on a routine training ride last April, never imagining they’d return home with more than just tired legs.
On their way back, under the scorching sun, they noticed a small brown dog lying helpless in the desert—skinny, weak, and silently begging for help with his eyes.
The poor dachshund had clearly been abandoned. In the middle of nowhere, with no food or water for days, his survival hung by a thread. “We knew immediately he’d been left behind,” Rosilene recalled, heartbroken by the sight.

Though still 40 kilometers from home, Ladislau didn’t hesitate. He gently lifted the dog and tucked him into his hydration backpack, determined to carry him the entire way back. “Every kilometer felt like forever,” he said, focused only on getting the little dog to safety.

Once home, they named him Rotivi—though Ladislau affectionately calls him Pelanka. Day by day, Rotivi recovered from his malnourished state, blossoming into a healthy, happy companion. The bond between them deepened quickly, built on trust, gratitude, and unconditional love.

“He’s our companion now, always by our side,” Rosilene said proudly. Rotivi’s story isn’t just about survival—it’s a powerful reminder of how compassion can change lives, both human and animal.
Today, Rotivi joins his rescuers on every bike ride, a joyful presence pedaling through life with his newfound family. What began as a heartbreaking discovery has turned into a lifelong journey of love, healing, and unforgettable companionship.
