After three decades of captivity, a bear’s journey to freedom is remarkable. Fifi, a bear who endured a lifetime of hardship at a roadside zoo in Pennsylvania, has finally found solace in the sprawling grasslands of Colorado.
Fifi was confined to the confines of Big Bear Farm Zoo Park for ten long years, where she was coerced into performing tricks for visitors. Dismal living conditions and substandard treatment marred her existence.

Fifi could not roam free or be relocated to a proper sanctuary when the zoo closed its doors.

Instead, she languished in a decrepit car for the next twenty years, devoid of adequate shelter or care.
Thankfully, a glimmer of hope emerged when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and The Wild Animal Sanctuary joined forces for Fifi’s rescue.

Upon her liberation, Fifi’s condition was dire—emaciated, with a tattered coat and untreated arthritis, testament to three decades of neglect.
Transported to The Wild Animal Sanctuary’s expansive 720-acre refuge in Colorado, Fifi, alongside two fellow rescued bears, embarked on a journey of rehabilitation and renewal.
The sanctuary’s mission, to provide lifelong homes for captive wild animals and raise awareness about wildlife conservation, resonated deeply with Fifi’s plight.
Despite concerns about her adjustment after years of captivity, Fifi defied all odds, swiftly acclimating to her new surroundings amidst sprawling grasslands and serene swimming holes.
Within five months, her health had improved significantly, her coat regained its luster, and her arthritis alleviated.
For the first time in her life, Fifi had the opportunity to experience the natural rhythms of hibernation, thanks to the sanctuary’s provision of a genuine den.
Fifi’s story serves as a testament to the resilience of animals and the transformative power of compassionate care.
